Looking ahead at the week in high school sports
Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Monday — Clark at Desert Oasis, 6:30 p.m.
Jacob Heese leads the area in scoring, and the senior swingman will need a big game if the Diamondbacks are going to upset second-ranked Clark.
Tuesday — Cheyenne at Desert Pines, 6:30 p.m.
This is a rematch of last year’s Class 3A state title game. The winner will have the early advantage in the Sunset League.
Wednesday — Las Vegas at Eldorado, 6:30 p.m.
These teams played overtime in LV Prep Championship title game, with host Las Vegas prevailing. The Sundevils will look for revenge at home.
Saturday — Battle Born Classic at Durango, 11:30 a.m.
The annual event features seven games (including two girls games), beginning at 11:30 a.m. with Legacy taking on Rancho. Centennial, Silverado, Cimarron-Memorial, Durango, Liberty and Chaparral also are scheduled to participate.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Tuesday — Green Valley at Foothill, 5 p.m.
The Southeast League is all but Liberty’s to claim. But the remaining three league playoff spots are still up for grabs, and this could be a battle for the No. 2 seed.
Tuesday — Faith Lutheran at Cimarron-Memorial, 5 p.m.
The Spartans have been one of Southern Nevada’s surprise teams this season. They will have an inside track on the Northwest League’s second playoff spot if they win here. The Crusaders also are also in the mix, and a victory here could catapult them to the top of the league along with Centennial.
Wednesday — Canyon Springs at Cheyenne, 5 p.m.
One of the top Class 3A Sunset League teams will host the Pioneers in a nonleague battle before league play kicks off.
Thursday — Green Valley at Liberty, 5 p.m.
The Patriots have two bonafide stars and future Division I players in Dre’una Edwards (Utah) and Rae Burrell (Tennessee) and are the clear-cut favorite to win the Sunrise Region. Can the Gators, a team full of young talent, pull off the upset?
Thursday — Legacy at Arbor View, 5 p.m.
Outside of Centennial, Northwest League teams are going to beat each other up this season. Each game becomes increasingly important as the season winds down, and a win here could help secure a playoff spot.
Friday — Desert Oasis at Bishop Gorman, 5 p.m.
A pair of top-five teams square off in one of the most anticipated matchups of the girls basketball season. Will the fourth-ranked Diamondbacks have a size advantage with Dajaah Lightfoot and Sierra Mich’l, or will the No. 5 Gaels hold court at home?
Saturday — Battle Born Classic at Durango, 2:30 p.m.
Liberty and Bishop Gorman are the only two varsity girls teams in this all-day basketball event. Both will meet two out-of-state opponents, with Liberty facing Wasatch (Utah) and Gorman taking on Mount Miguel (Calif.).
FLAG FOOTBALL
Wednesday — Green Valley at Foothill, 4:30 p.m.
The unbeaten Gators (11-0) head to Foothill for a Southeast League date with the Falcons, who are 4-2 in the league.
WRESTLING
Wednesday — Centennial at Arbor View, 6 p.m.
One of the best regular season meets of the year, the Aggies host the Bulldogs and an old friend: senior Ryder Marchello, who transferred from Arbor View after last season.
Friday — Five Counties Tournament at Fountain Valley (Calif.), 3 p.m.
Centennial, Palo Verde and Las Vegas head west in one of the top tournaments of the weekend.
Friday — Battle for the Belt at Temecula Valley (Calif.), 3 p.m.
The area’s top private schools are also headed to California, as Bishop Gorman and Faith Lutheran will look to prove themselves against out-of-state competition.
