A look at the athletes of the year for the winter sports season.
Boys basketball
Chuck O’Bannon, Bishop Gorman
The senior was the co-Most Valuable Player in the Southwest League and led the Gaels to a sixth consecutive state championship. O’Bannon averaged 21.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists, and had 36 points in the state final. He committed to Southern California.
Girls basketball
Samantha Thomas, Centennial
The senior forward was the Player of the Year in the Northwest League and averaged 16.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 3.0 steals and 3.0 blocks to help the Bulldogs win their third straight Class 4A state title. Thomas signed with Arizona.
Boys bowling
Caleb Andrews, Clark
The surprise star of the Class 4A individual state tournament, Andrews won the state title with a 709 series. He also helped lead Clark to the region final.
Girls bowling
Leah Glazer, Bishop Gorman
Glazer posted the highest score regardless of gender at the state individual tournament. Her 747 series score easily clinched the Class 4A state title.
Flag football
Tiarra Del Rosario, Cimarron-Memorial
The sophomore, who was named the Class 4A state Player of the Year by coaches, led Southern Nevada in completion percentage (68.3 percent), passing yards (5,046) and touchdown passes (66). She also ran for 751 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Spartans.
Boys skiing
Cole Matteson, Galena
The sophomore finished first overall at state (2:03.9) and won two regular-season races.
Girls skiing
Gigi Taylor, Bishop Manogue
The junior finished first in the overall state race (2:08.8) and in the individual slalom (1:03.8). She finished in the top five in every race, including two wins and two second-place finishes.
Wrestling
Ian Timmins, Wooster
The senior overcame a knee injury in the Class 4A 126-pound state title match to become the 11th wrestler in Nevada history to win four state championships. He was named the Northern Region lower weight wrestler of the year.
