Las Vegas warms up a bit, breaks high-temperature record

Las Vegas is in the middle of winter, but you wouldn’t know it from watching people walking around in their shorts and T-shirts Saturday.

Valley temperatures reached 78 degrees, one degree higher than the previous record of 77 set on Feb. 7, 1963, according to the National Weather Service.

This follows a trend of above-average temperatures the valley has seen in 2015, meteorologist Dan Berc said.

Last month was the third warmest January on record and temperature highs were often “way above average,” he said.

But don’t expected conditions in the high 70s to last.

The high temperatures will drop more than 10 degrees, to 67, on Sunday, with an overnight low of 54, the weather service said. And they will continue to drop through Wednesday.

Las Vegas temperatures will reach a high of 71 degrees Monday, but will drop to 64 on Tuesday and 61 on Wednesday, when breezy conditions are expected, the weather service said.

The coldest night in the five-day period will arrive Wednesday when overnight lows are expected to dip to 49 degrees.

If you like rain and live west of Las Vegas in Parhump, Barstow or Owens Valley, Calif., you are in luck on Saturday, according to precipitation projection from the weather service.

Mount Charleston received 0.10 inches in an hour beginning about 5 p.m. Saturday, Berc said. If the Las Vegas Valley sees precipitation, it won’t be more than “maybe some sprinkles.” Clear skies are forecast for Sunday.
