Woman, 6-year-old son die after rescue from Las Vegas house fire

A woman and her 6-year-old son died after being pulled from a fire Tuesday morning inside a custom, two-story house in western Las Vegas.

Early in the investigation, the Las Vegas Fire Department reported that it had pulled two children from the four-bedroom house at 1930 Fox Canyon Circle, near South Cimarron Road and West Sahara Avenue. But it later updated the report to say that two adults and a child had been removed from the smoke-filled home.

The fire, in a second-floor bedroom, was reported just before 8:20 a.m. and was extinguished within about 15 minutes. The mother and son were found in that bedroom with burns and taken to a hospital, where they later died, according to department spokesman Tim Szymanski.

The Clark County coroner’s office will identify them after their families have been notified of their deaths, which marked the second and third fire-related fatalities this year in the city of Las Vegas.

Firefighters also found the boy’s uncle just outside the home with smoke inhalation. He also was taken to the hospital for treatment, although his condition as of Tuesday afternoon was not immediately known.

Clark County property records show that the nearly 5,400-square-foot home is owned by Dixie and Jose Zenon. It was built in 1997.

Szymanski said the fire caused $25,000 in damage to the bedroom. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Tuesday afternoon.
