Richy strikes out nine in complete-game victory for UNLV

John Richy pitched his third complete game of the season to lead UNLV to a 2-1 Mountain West baseball victory over San Jose State on Saturday at Wilson Stadium.
Richy (6-2) scattered 10 hits and struck out nine for the Rebels, ranked 20th by Baseball America. The junior didn’t walk a batter and has allowed one walk with 30 strikeouts in his past 25 1/3 innings.
Richy escaped out of jams twice. With the score tied 1-1, San Jose State (10-25, 5-12) had runners at second and third with one out in the sixth, but Richy got a strikeout and flyout to end the inning.
In the eighth, the Spartans had runners at first and third with one out, but a double play ended the inning.
UNLV (25-10, 13-4 MW) scored the winning run in the eighth inning on Erik VanMeetren’s ground-rule double that scored Johnathan Torres, who ran for Patrick Armstrong after Armstrong hit a one-out triple.
Morgan Stotts singled home Erik VanMeetren in the fourth for the Rebels’ first run. San Jose State tied the score in the fifth.
Stotts and VanMeetren each had two hits and one RBI for UNLV.
The Rebels, 15-1 at home, will go for a three-game sweep at 1:05 p.m. today. Bryan Bonnell (4-2, 1.61 ERA) will start for UNLV.
