UNLV baseball team suffers first loss of season
UNLV’s ninth-inning rally fell short Friday in an 8-7 baseball loss to Tennessee at Knoxville, the team’s first of the season.
The Rebels (4-1) trailed 8-2 before scoring five runs in the ninth, but with runners at first and third, pinch hitter Dylan Ellis struck out looking to end the game.
Nick Senzel’s grand slam off Joey Lauria with two out in the seventh capped a five-run inning and gave Tennessee (5-0) an 8-2 lead. All the runs were unearned in the inning, which included two batters hit by pitch, a wild pitch and an error.
UNLV starter Erick Fedde (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing three runs, all earned, on seven hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts.
Nine Rebels had one hit apiece, with Matt McCallister hitting a two-run homer to give UNLV a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Three of the team’s runs were earned.
The second game of the three-game series will be at 10 a.m. today. It will be broadcast on KBAD-AM (920).
