Local colleges roundup: UNLV baseball stuns No. 9 Stanford, 3-2

Joey Swanner hit an RBI double, and the UNLV baseball team took advantage of three errors in the second inning to beat No. 9 Stanford and ace Mark Appel 3-2 on Friday at Palo Alto, Calif.

The Rebels (11-3) picked up their seventh win in a row. They took a 2-0 lead in the second on the three errors by the Cardinal (10-3).

After Stanford cut the lead to one, Swanner’s double down the left-field line plated Joey Armstrong to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead.

Appel allowed four hits and struck out 15 Rebels. He now has at least 10 strikeouts in three straight starts.

Erick Fedde allowed two runs on six hits in six innings for UNLV. Brady Zuniga pitched the final three innings.

The teams play again at 1 p.m. today.

■ SOFTBALL — Jenina Ortega’s single in the ninth inning gave North Dakota State a 1-0 victory over UNLV in the Long Beach State Invitational at Long Beach, Calif.

Amanda Oliveto (6-7) allowed only two hits in the game for the Rebels (7-14) and struck out 10 Bison (8-10).

UNLV’s first scheduled game of the day against UC Santa Barbara was rained out.

The Rebels continue the tournament today against Virginia Tech at 11:30 a.m. and Weber State at 2 p.m.

■ TENNIS — Wet weather postponed two women’s matches and one men’s match at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The women’s matches against Utah State and UC Riverside will be played as a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. today.

The men will play their scheduled match with UC Irvine at 2 p.m. today. Friday’s match with Air Force will now be at 10 a.m. Sunday.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA

■ BASEBALL — Thomas Pannone hit a three-run home run to lift CSN to a 5-2 victory over Salt Lake Community College to salvage a split of their doubleheader at West Jordan, Utah.

CSN (19-6, 7-1) had its 11-game winning streak snapped in a 5-3 loss to open the day. Cory Welch hit a two-run home run in the defeat.

In the second game, Morgan Stotts hit a solo home run to support John Conquy, who struck out six.

■ SOFTBALL — Rhiana Balaun hit home runs in each game to give CSN a doubleheader sweep of Colorado Northwestern Community College at the Russell Road Recreation Complex.

Balaun went 2-for-3 with a solo shot in a 6-0 win to open the day. Destinee Chang and Aimee Aipa each went 2-for-3 with a double for the Coyotes (15-12, 10-8).

Sarah Rivera pitched a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

CSN held a 1-0 lead in the second game when the lights briefly went out at the start of the fifth inning. Colorado Northwestern scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead, but CSN answered with four of its own in the bottom of the frame to earn a 5-4 victory.

Balaun’s three-run homer tied the score at 4, and Kalei Adams’ double put CSN in front to stay.

The teams play another doubleheader at noon today.
