Harold Arlen songbook focus of fundraiser

The fourth "Night of 1,000 Stars," a benefit for the Family and Children Treatment Center of Southern Nevada, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Hilton Theater at the Las Vegas Hilton, 3000 Paradise Road.

The music of "The Wizard of Oz" composer Harold Arlen will be performed by members of the cast of "Menopause the Musical," the Scintas, Sandy Hackett, Lisa Dawn Miller, Bill Fayne and the Las Vegas Tenors.

Adrian Zmed will be the evening's master of ceremonies.

Tickets are $32.51. A $115.01 ticket includes a reception with the cast, and a $665 ticket includes special seating for six, cocktails and a reception with the cast.

Doo-wop convention taking over Alexis Park

Dozens of doo-wop groups will be in attendance today and Saturday at the second annual "Cool Bobby B Doo Wop Convention" at the Alexis Park Resort, 375 E. Harmon Ave.

Among the groups scheduled to appear are the Moonglows, the Fleetwoods, Lewis Lymon, Jimmy Castor, the Edsels, the Capris, the Elegants, the Pentagons and Little Caesar and the Romans.

A reception and sock-hop are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today. A private autograph session, an amateur doo-wop contest and a car show will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday with a finale concert at 7 p.m.

Tickets for today's events are $60, tickets for Saturday are $75 in advance and $80 at the door, and a weekend pass is $129.

Actress known for roles in ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Downton Abbey,’ dies

Maggie Smith, the actor who won an Oscar for “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in 1969 and gained new fans in the 21st century as the dowager Countess of Grantham in “Downton Abbey” and Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, died Friday.
