Friendly Ford senior master tech specializes in diesels
Today’s modern-day vehicles are not usually worked on by their owners. From compact passenger vehicles such as the Fiesta to trucks such as the Ford F-750 weighing as much 10,000 to 12,000 pounds, it takes a qualified service specialist to work on the vehicles nowadays.
Friendly Ford’s David Kovarik is the only Ford certified senior master tech with the dealership, where he has worked for the past six years.
“When I first started out, I wanted to work on my own vehicles,” Kovarik said. “A recruiter came to our high school. He was recruiting for the college Phoenix Institute of Technology where we worked to get a two-year associate degree in automotive education.”
Kovarik had no idea what he was going to do, but he did have an interest in the mechanical side of the automotive business.
“I got into the automotive business in 1987 and haven’t looked back since,” he said.
Kovarik’s specialty at Friendly Ford is the diesel end of the industry although he can fix most anything as a bumper-to-bumper tech.
“The new-generation Ford diesel engine is a Ford design that was originally built by (Navistar) International,” Kovarik said. “However, Ford now builds its own diesel engines … which are very popular.
“The new motor it has now is extremely reliable and it is extremely quiet. Not only that, but they’re extremely fast and smooth-riding. There are no transmission issues and no engine issues.”
Kovarik said the electronics involved in the automotive business requires recertification every few years.
“The electronics now included in a Ford are unbelievable,” he said. “Nowadays, you can have up to 10 or 12 modules that run all different parts of the vehicle. That includes everything from the air bags to the lighting and the engine along any electrical that is in the car.
“There is even a module that controls the seating and one to control the instrument system. There is even a module for tire pressure.”
Situated at 660 N. Decatur Blvd., Friendly Ford has been at the same location since 1970.
