Wynn wins court ruling in China over unpaid gambling debts

Wynn Resorts Ltd. won a ruling in the Hong Kong High Court last week against a high-end customer who owed Wynn Macau almost $3.7 million.

The court action against Henry Mong Hengli was for debts he ran up at Wynn Macau. Wynn also filed a writ against the gambler in Hong Kong for debts he ran up at the company’s Wynn Las Vegas, the South China Morning Post reported.

Mong Hengli reportedly owes Wynn Resorts a total of $6.75 million.

According to Chinese media, this was the first case where a Macau casino operator attempted to recoup gambling debts through the courts in either Macau or Hong Kong.

The court decision could mark a turning point for Macau’s gaming industry. Macau is heavily driven by the high-end market, which accounts for around two thirds of all casino revenue in the gaming enclave.
