Wind caused power outage affecting 2 Las Vegas Strip casinos
Two Strip properties were without power for about an hour early Wednesday morning.
The MGM Grand and New York-New York lost power around 5:15 a.m. The lights were back on at both properties just before 6:30 a.m.
Inspections indicate the outage was wind-related, MGM Resorts spokeswoman Yvette Monet said. Strong winds likely blew debris into a substation, causing a sudden loss of power for the two resorts.
MGM Resorts International left NV Energy in October, but an NV Energy spokeswoman said the company helped restore power.
While power was still out, a backup system supplied power to the hotels, Monet said.
The backup power system “immediately goes into effect” during power outages, she said, limiting disruption.
Because of the backup power, no compensation to hotel guests will be necessary, Monet said. The outage did not disrupt guests, she said, and both hotels quickly returned to full operations.
“We appreciate the understanding of our guests and apologize for any inconvenience,” she said in a statement.
