1 dead after attempted carjacking in Henderson

Officers spent Tuesday afternoon searching for an attempted carjacker who police said ran a person over in Henderson.

Police were called at 4:10 p.m. to the intersection of Welpman Way and Las Vegas Boulevard South after a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, according to a statement from the Henderson Police Department.

Investigators believe a man attempted to steal a vehicle from a driver, then hit the victim with the vehicle before running away, leaving the car, police said. The victim died at the scene.

More than an hour later, patrol cars now at the scene, a woman sobbed while she spoke to police. The brother of the victim stood across the street. The woman crying had been a passenger in the car, he said. A representative from the brother’s church stood with him, offering support.

The victim had been visiting from Louisiana, the brother said.

The attempted carjacker was not in custody Tuesday evening. Las Vegas police had deployed a helicopter to help find him, Henderson police said.
