Ex-building executive sentenced to prison in fraud scheme

A former home-building executive was sentenced Friday to 63 months in federal prison for stealing about $1.4 million from his employer and not paying taxes on the money.

William “Bart” Monroe also was ordered to pay some $3.7 million in restitution to his former employer, Meritage Homes of Nevada, and another $568,412 to the Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden said.

The sentence was handed out by U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro.

Monroe, 47, of Henderson pleaded guilty in June to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, 11 counts of mail fraud and one count of tax evasion.

He used his authority as vice president of Meritage Homes to approve fraudulent invoices that benefited him and his co-conspirators, according to his plea agreement. From July 2004 through July 2008, Monroe received 11 payments from those invoices, totaling about $1.4 million, as his share of the scheme.

The case was investigated by the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation.
