Felon who fired on police sentenced
A felon who fired a weapon at Las Vegas police while leading them on a high speed chase in March 2011 was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday.
David Torres, 25, of Las Vegas, had pleaded guilty in January before Senior U.S. District Judge Roger Hunt to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The police chase involving Torres, who was driving a Red Dodge Caravan, reached speeds of 80 mph in northeast Las Vegas, Nevada U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden said in a news release. At one point during the chase, Torres fired a handgun striking the car of an officer.
After the chase ended, Torres resisted arrest, injuring an officer, Bogden said. A female passenger who three months pregnant was in the van at the time of the chase.
Torres has two previous felony convictions in Nevada for burglary and battery with substantial bodily harm.
