Jury finds Navy SEAL guilty in 2010 attack on Strip

A Navy SEAL was found guilty Wednesday of seven counts of battery in a March 2010 attack on eight people with a metal pipe at a Strip casino.

After a weeklong trial, the jury deliberated about eight hours before finding Luke Shawley guilty. He was acquitted on one count of burglary.

Prosecutors said Shawley was drunk on nearly 20 alcoholic beverages before the assaults, which were caught on surveillance video at The Venetian.

Shawley’s attorney, Ross Goodman, said during the trial that the special warfare operator had consumed only eight drinks and argued that one of the drinks was laced with drugs by an unknown person.

Shawley was placed on house arrest pending his sentencing hearing, set for Dec. 15 before Judge James Bixler.

Both prosecutors and Goodman declined to comment.
