Police arrest suspect in March shootings at Rio, UMC

A 24-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a March shootout at the Rio parking garage and subsequent shootings at a hospital, Las Vegas police said Wednesday.

Abdullah Sykes of Las Vegas was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on four counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of battery with a deadly weapon.

Detectives from the Gang Crimes Bureau made the arrest, said police, who did not detail their case against Sykes.

On March 11, three men were shot in a Rio parking garage about 4 a.m. Two more were shot outside University Medical Center several hours later. The shootings were gang-related, police said.

Officer Ray Steiber III, then 25, a veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department with more than five years experience, fired several times at a man who ran toward him during the shootout on the fourth floor of the casino’s east parking garage.

Steiber is the son of homicide Lt. Ray Steiber.

None of the injuries was fatal.

Officers called to the shooting saw men on foot and in vehicles firing weapons while trying to flee the resort just west of the Strip. Three people were injured, and more than 30 shots were fired.

Officer Steiber fired at a 22-year-old North Las Vegas man, but police did not know whether the man was injured by Steiber’s bullets or by the earlier gunfire. The man was not armed.

Two others were shot outside UMC when three men approached a group of 30 to 40 people who had gathered outside the hospital in support of the injured men.

The suspects fired into the crowd, wounding two people.
