Student in teacher sex case says he started it
A Chaparral High School mariachi teacher arrested Wednesday on two counts of sexual misconduct with a student was approached by the student for sex, according to his arrest report.
Adam R. Romo, 26, is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old boy who attends the school.
According to the report, Romo told Clark County School District police he had sex with the student in a bedroom closet at his home. The student knew Romo from the school band and through a relative, the report states.
The student and Romo told the police that the sex was consensual and that the student had been the one to approach the teacher, according to the arrest report.
Police discovered the improper conduct after the student told another teacher he had sex with Romo. The teacher was required by law to report the conduct to police.
Romo teaches a full-time mariachi program that has more than 180 students at Chaparral. The school is at 3850 Annie Oakley Drive, near U.S. Highway 95 and Flamingo Road.
Romo is scheduled for a court appearance today .
State law says a person who is 21 or older and in position of authority is guilty of a category C felony if he or she “engages in sexual conduct with a pupil who is 16 or 17 years of age and who is enrolled in or attending the public school or private school at which the person is employed.”
