Motorist shot dead while driving on I-15 near Strip, police say

Police investigate a shooting on Interstate 15 southbound on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024, in Las Veg ...

A motorist was fatally shot Thursday night while driving on Interstate 15 near the Las Vegas Strip.

The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes between Spring Mountain and Flamingo roads, said Lt. Ken Nagle of the Metropolitan Police Department.

“An occupant from another vehicle shot and struck the victim at least one time,” Nagle said in a text message. “The victim crashed into the center median.”

In a news release Friday morning, Las Vegas police said arriving officers located the driver of a gray SUV, who was identified only as a male, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Medical personnel transported the victim to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The identification of the victim, as well as the cause and manner of death, will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office.

The southbound lanes of the freeway have since been reopened.

I-15 was the site of another fatal shooting in September 2020 when Kamiah Bird, 37, was killed in what police suspected was an act of road rage. That shooting occurred in the southbound lanes near the Flamingo Road exit as Bird was driving home from her casino job.

Metro did not directly answer a question Friday about whether a suspect had been identified or an arrest made in the slaying of Bird.

“The Kamiah Bird investigation is still an ongoing investigation,” a spokesperson said.
