Suspect arrested in North Las Vegas apartment complex slaying

Updated April 1, 2021 - 4:40 pm

North Las Vegas police have arrested a 29-year-old man in a March 3 killing at an apartment complex.

Clark County Detention Center records show Jamel Gibbs was booked on a charge of open murder with use of a deadly weapon on Wednesday. Police spokesman Alexander Cuevas confirmed Gibbs was arrested in the killing of Jaylon Tiffith, 29, at an apartment complex on the 3900 block of North Scott Robinson Boulevard, near West Alexander Road.

Officers found Tiffith dead at the scene of the shooting. The Clark County coroner’s office said Tiffith died from a gunshot wound to the head.

According to Gibbs’ arrest report, Tiffith was his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend and father of her child. Tiffith was dropping their daughter off with her mother when Gibbs shot him.

Tiffith’s cousin, who accompanied him for the drop-off and witnessed the shooting, told police that Gibbs’ girlfriend approached the car and started fighting with Tiffith. She went back inside the apartment and Gibbs came out with a handgun, then shot Tiffith in the head, the report said.

Gibbs left in his girlfriend’s car, and his girlfriend fled the scene on foot. But the girlfriend went to a North Las Vegas police station that evening to “do the right thing” and tell police what happened, the report said.

She told police that Gibbs and Tiffith had argued on the phone and over social media before, but she had never heard them threaten each other. She said they often fought over “their affinity for her.”

North Las Vegas Justice Court records indicate Gibbs was arrested on a warrant issued March 8 and that he made a court appearance in the case on Tuesday.
