Suspect arrested in slaying of 19-year-old in North Las Vegas

Updated June 9, 2021 - 10:53 am

North Las Vegas police have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting on May 1.

Khalil Young, who is also identified in court records as Khalil Young-Bernard, was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on Saturday, jail records show. He is accused of shooting and killing 19-year-old Khyler Johnson, North Las Vegas Police Department spokesman Alex Cuevas said.

Police were called at about 10:40 p.m. to an apartment complex on the 4200 block of Commerce Street, near Craig Road, after receiving reports of a shooting, the department has said. When officers arrived, they received reports of more gunfire involving two vehicles at the nearby intersection.

Johnson was found inside a car that had hit a median on the 100 block of Craig Road, police said.

He died of a gunshot wound to the lower back, and his death was ruled a homicide, the Clark County coroner’s office has said.

According to arresting documents, Johnson was driving with his cousin in the car when Young shot at them from another car.

Johnson’s family told police that the 19-year-old had been in a physical fight with Young within a month of the shooting, and Young had been sending him threatening text messages, the report said.

Police later spoke with Young’s girlfriend, who told detectives she met with Young and then Johnson the night of May 1. When she and Johnson were outside her apartment, they saw Young driving toward them, the report said.

The woman told police that Johnson and his cousin got back in the car, and she saw Young driving after them. She then heard numerous gunshots.

Young later told the woman that one of the men “shot at him so he shot back,” the report said. The woman also led police to Young’s abandoned car, which had bullet holes in the hood and matched the description of the vehicle used in the shooting.

Young has been charged with murder with a deadly weapon and two firearm charges, court records show.

He remained in jail on Wednesday without bail. A preliminary hearing in the case was scheduled for June 22.
