Police shoot at woman in west Las Vegas neighborhood; 1 arrested
A woman who was suspected of being in a vehicle with stolen license plates Friday night was arrested after a Las Vegas police officer, believing she was armed, shot at her but didn’t hit her, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
After running from officers, the woman barricaded herself in a shed in the backyard of a west Las Vegas home and was eventually taken into custody, police said.
According to a Metro news release, the incident began just before 9 p.m., when officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle with stolen license plates parked in the West Flamingo and South Fort Apache roads area.
When officers got there, the vehicle took off. Officers then found the vehicle near West Mountain Lakes Avenue and South Quilting Bear Street. The woman “fled on foot,” police said.
“An officer confronted the female reaching into a bag alongside a residence where he believed she was armed,” said Metro Capt. Kurt McKenzie in a video statement included with the press release. “The officer discharged his firearm and the female ran into a nearby backyard where she barricaded herself in a shed.”
Police descended on the area and evacuated nearby homes. Officers with Metro’s SWAT team and the Crisis Negotiation Team took the woman into custody without incident, McKenzie said.
Medical personnel were requested but it was discovered that the woman hadn’t been hit by any gunfire, police said.
It was the 12th officer-involved shooting of 2024, police said. McKenzie said the identify of the officer who fired his weapon would be released after 48 hours and that further information would be released 72 hours after the incident.
