Police involved in shooting in south Las Vegas Valley

Updated September 18, 2022 - 8:22 am

Las Vegas police shot a man after he pulled out a gun when they initiated a stop on him in a south valley neighborhood Saturday night.

Gunfire erupted about 7:30 p.m. near Serene Avenue and Haven Street, just east of Las Vegas Boulevard South, Metropolitan Police Department Capt. Carlos Hank said.

Officers had tried to stop a “suspicious” person in the neighborhood when he pulled out a gun, Hank said.

A pair of officers opened fire, Hank said. It was unclear if the suspect, who was the only person struck, pulled the trigger.

He was taken to University Medical Center, but additional information on his medical condition was not released. Metro is expected to identify the two officers within 48 hours and provide a detailed briefing 24 hours after that.

Anyone with additional information can contact Metro at 702-828-8452. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555, or go to crimestoppersofnv.com.

Saturday’s shooting marked the ninth time Las Vegas police have shot someone this year and the second this month.

A suspect shot Metro officer Tierney Tomburo during a Sept. 10 foot chase near UNLV during a foot pursuit.

Gabriel Herrera Charles, 27, had taken off running during a traffic stop and was fatally injured when Tomburo returned fire. The officer has since been released from the hospital.

North Las Vegas police have shot two people in 2022, while Henderson police have reported three shootings.
