Teen dies after riding skateboard while clinging to vehicle

Updated May 19, 2022 - 8:02 pm

A 15-year-old boy died Tuesday, police said, after he was run over by a Jeep from which he had been hanging off the side.

The teen, whose name was not released, was riding a skateboard and holding onto a 2019 Jeep Wrangler driving near Forsythe Drive and Skywood Way at around 9 p.m. Friday, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department.

Witnesses told police the boy fell off the skateboard and was run over. He was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on Tuesday.

The driver of the Jeep, 19-year-old Destiny Jimenez, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center for driving while impaired and driving without a license, police said.

According to an arrest report released Thursday, Jimenez said the teenager was hanging on to her Jeep with his skateboard so he could be pulled along. He was ejected from the skateboard and then run over by the rear tire of the car, police said.

Jimenez told police at the scene that she had “consumed alcoholic beverages before the collision” and had also smoked a marijuana joint, according to the report. Jimenez was also driving without a license, police said.

Another passenger of the Jeep told police that she had been driving the vehicle until the teenager asked to ride the skateboard on the side. The passenger said she was not willing to drive while he did that, and Jimenez took the wheel of the vehicle.

Jimenez is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, according to jail records.
