A Bid For Fame

Hundreds of items from rock 'n' roll history are up for auction this weekend in the Mardi Gras Ballroom at The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.

The Fame Bureau's Rock 'n' Roll Circus begins at 6 p.m. today with a preview of the items, ranging from Ozzy Osbourne's billiard table and Stevie Nicks' velvet cape to Paul McCartney's left-handed violin-shaped bass guitar and Elton John's green jumpsuit from the 1982 "Jump Up" tour.

Auction sessions will take place Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

That's just one of the events going on around the city this weekend. Others include:

• The fifth annual Best in Show, presented by the Animal Foundation, will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Orleans Arena, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.

Shelter dogs will be showcased at the event, which will be followed by a pet adoption.

More than 50 small, medium and large breed dogs will compete in four categories. American Kennel Club judges will decide the winners.

Doors open at noon.

More than 2,500 people attended last year's event, including 500 sponsors.

Tickets are $12.50 for adults and $5 for seniors 65 and older and children 2-10.

An event ticket is required to attend the post-show pet adoption.

The Animal Foundation is the regional animal shelter for Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Clark County.

• Acclaimed pianist Lang Lang will perform Saturday in the "Stars on the Lake" concert series with guests Marc Yu, a 7-year-old musical prodigy, and opera singer Giorgia Fumanti on the floating stage at MonteLago Village in Lake Las Vegas Resort, 30 Strada di Villagio, Henderson.

Gates will open at 6 p.m., and the concert will start at 8 p.m.

Considered one of the top concert pianists, the 24-year-old has performed on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and has appeared on "Sesame Street." He is the first Chinese pianist to play with the top orchestras in the United States.

Yu began playing piano at age 3 and has memorized complicated concertos and composed some of his own.

Fumanti is an Italian-born soprano who got her start in Canada and has since performed at the NHL All-Star Game and toured with Jose Carreras.

Tickets start at $40 for lawn seating. Reserved seats are $65 and floating VIP seats are $125. Guests in lawn seating can bring blankets or pillows, but no chairs are allowed.

Tickets in the VIP or reserved sections come with resort seating.

Coolers are not permitted. Children 2 and younger are admitted free.

• Vocalist Jimmy Scott will perform in the Jazz in the Park concert series Saturday at the Clark County Amphitheater, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

Scott, 82, made his recording debut in 1948 with Lionel Hampton and the group's hit "Everybody's Somebody's Fool." A contract dispute in 1982 caused Smith to quit the music business, but he resumed club dates in 1985 and appeared in the TV series "Twin Peaks."

His latest album is 2005's "All or Nothing at All."

Showtime is 8 p.m. Seating for those with picnic baskets, blankets and low-back chairs starts at 7.

Admission is free. Food will be available for purchase.

• Nathan Tanouye and the Las Vegas Jazz Connection, the Cunninghams, Las Vegas Jazz Express, Lindell Blake, and Martin Nievera featuring the music of Russ Freeman will take to the stage Saturday at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

Performances begin at 2 p.m.

• Local jazz ensemble the Stoney Curtis Band will headline the Starlite Music Series on Saturday at Aliante's Nature Discovery Park, 2627 Nature Park Drive in North Las Vegas.

Scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m., the concert will allow blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets.

There will be barbecue and beverages from Martino's Grill, Smokin' Sam's BBQ, Soul 2 Soul and Del's Lemonade available for purchase.
