SHOWS FOR THE BIRDS

AT SPRINGS PRESERVE

Let us prey.

Sounds ominous but it’s really feathery fun as Springs Preserve offers visitors its “Wings over the Springs — Live Bird of Prey” show. Gawk at hawks, eagles, falcons, owls and ravens, among others, and learn how their habits — i.e., preying on other species — help sustain the environment and maintain the natural order.

Get acquainted with the exotic subsets of the winged creatures, which include the Eurasian eagle owl, Gryfalcon, Saker falcon, Barbary Saker falcon, Lanner Barbary, African hawk eagle, red-necked falcon and African crow raven. What distinguishes them from one another? Find out at presentations at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through the end of February.

The show is included with general admission to Springs Preserve at 333 S. Valley View Blvd. Prices are $4.95 to $9.95 for Nevada residents, and $10.95 to $18.95 for nonresidents, with children under 5 years old admitted free. Springs Preserve is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Call 822-7700 or visit www.springspreserve.org.

FEMALE SEXUALITY

EXPLORED AT GALLERY

Sex is never just about sex. In this instance, it’s about “the incredible gravitational power of female sexuality that is the driving force that pervades our existence and orders our lives.” Phew. Glad we cleared that up.

For further elucidation, venture into Sin City Gallery’s “Anima Motrix” “exhibit, in which the paintings and drawings of three female artists — Lolita Develay, Melissa Herrington and Remy Holwick — explore the sensual subject through Jan. 29.

Sin City Gallery is located inside the Arts Factory downtown at 107 E. Charleston Blvd., Suite 100. Hours are 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Call 608-2461 or check out www.sincitygallery.com for more information.

As “Anima Motrix” curator Jessica Lo notes, quoting Alexander Woollcott: “Nothing risque, nothing gained.”
