‘Back to the Future’ short film coming Oct. 21

LOS ANGELES — We may not have hoverboards yet, but by Oct. 21, 2015, we will have a new “Back to the Future” short film, which features Christopher Lloyd’s inimitable Doc Brown going, well, back to the future to explain why the 2015 we’re living in looks markedly different from the version we saw in “Back to the Future II.”

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first film – and the aforementioned date, which has become known as “Back to the Future Day” thanks to Doc Brown and Marty McFly’s (Michael J. Fox) trip to a futuristic 2015 in “BTTF 2” – the entire trilogy is being released on Blu-Ray and DVD, along with the release of the “BTTF” animated series, which is bowing on DVD for the first time.

The new short, titled “Doc Brown Saves the World” will only be available with the 30th anniversary set. Watch a teaser for the new film below.

Last year, news surfaced that director Robert Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale were teaming with Universal Stage Prods., producer Colin Ingram and Amblin Entertainment to turn the 1985 time-travel comedy into a stage musical, which was originally intended to bow in 2015 to coincide with the anniversary. The project is still in the works, with a premiere date yet to be announced.
