El Cortez serves cranberry-walnut bread

It’s not unusual for Taste of the Town readers to search for foods they’ve tasted in local restaurants, and that was the case with a recent request from Cheri Carr. Carr is looking for a cranberry-walnut bread that she said used to be served at The Flame Steakhouse at the El Cortez.

After the item appeared, John Civiello, the hotel’s food and beverage director, emailed that they still serve it, as one of three choices offered (the others being a cheddar roll and a French baguette). Ann Brown faxed that the bread was available at Great Buns Bakery at 3270 E. Tropicana Ave., but Great Buns owner Lynn Madonia said that while the bakery does sell cranberry-walnut bread to many of the hotels, the El Cortez isn’t one of them. …

For Walter Yellen, who’s looking for New York-style potato knishes, which he used to get at Costco, Pam Crawford and Valerie Weinberg recommended the Bagel Cafe, 301 N. Buffalo Drive, and Brown and Jennifer Esposito recommended Glazier’s Food Marketplace at 8525 W. Warm Springs Road, with Esposito noting that they’re “actual New York knishes.” …

For Wendy Pachla of Hurricane, Utah, who’s looking for Sahlen skinless hot dogs and a haddock fish fry, Jan Visser, noting that Pachla “must be from Buffalo,” recommended www.sahlen.com for the former and Santora’s Sunset Bar & Grill at 4401 W. Sunset Road in Henderson for the latter and added, “all we have to do is find Webber’s mustard and we are all set.” …

For Bob Moudree, who’s looking for duck eggs, Dorothy Randesi reported spotting them at 99 Ranch Market at 4155 Spring Mountain Road; a call to the market elicited the information that the eggs are cooked. …

Sheri Jacobs, who was looking for Weight Watchers Coffee Cakes, answered her own request, reporting that they’re available in the bakery section at Albertsons at 7151 W. Craig Road. …

And Dan Santoni emailed a recommendation for readers. After searching far and wide for an East Coast-style cheeseburger sub in Las Vegas, he reported finding a good one at North End Pizzeria, 6440 N. Durango Drive. …

Here are more reader requests:

John Bisci: a local source for Atkins Diet frozen entrees;

John Turzer: Sam Choy marinades from Hawaii;

Jim Gwinnup, who has a “nostalgic craving”: Maypo

Rista Trutanich: fresh or frozen ravioli with a beef-and-spinach filling;

Sandi Davis: mock turtle soup, fresh and canned;

And Jim and Angie Ellsworth have a popular request, for which the response changes every few years — broasted chicken — plus mojo potatoes, which are crumb-coated and deep-fried.
