Hunt for Superman ice cream begins

Sometimes I get a Taste of the Town letter that strikes a chord, and this week this was it:

"My daughter is very pregnant. She is having a major craving for Superman ice cream. We are all from Michigan and this product was available everywhere there. No one has heard of it here in Vegas. Can you help?" Jane Kidd, "newly moved to Vegas from Ludington, Mich."

Despite a Cleveland childhood I'd never heard of Superman ice cream, but a little research revealed that it is indeed widely popular in Michigan. It's made with swirls of bright blue, yellow and red ice creams and it's the colors evoking comic-book superheroes that led to the name. And the flavors of those ice creams? Blue moon, vanilla or banana and any of a myriad of red-berry flavors, although they apparently are the focus of some debate. And apparently Kidd's daughter isn't alone in her devotion; there's even a website dedicated to the search for it, www.SupermanIceCream.com.

Beyond that I came up pretty much empty, but I'm hoping readers can help. I can't promise Kidd's daughter will name her baby after you, but I'm confident she'll be grateful. ...

Here are more reader requests.

Julie Tutor: House Recipe brand Darjeeling tea bags;

Claudette Dorian: a local retail source for huckleberry ice cream - not vanilla with huckleberry ribbons;

Carol Webster: a local restaurant "that's not a mortgage payment per meal" that serves good escargot. Her favorite spot in Michigan served it "floating in garlic butter and smothered with Provolone";

Naomi Plisky: reader recommendations for restaurants that serve good roast duck - maybe similar to that on the buffet at the old Landmark.

And here are some found products:

For Ron Kassof, who's looking for a local source for jars of chopped hot cherry peppers, Janine Williams reported finding them at Smith's at 2255 N. Rampart Blvd. and Lisa Brown found them at Smith's at 450 N. Nellis Blvd. (Williams added that not all Smith's stores carry them). Brown said she also has seen them at Rocco's N.Y. Italian Deli at 1181 S. Buffalo Drive. ...

For Kay Harmon, who's looking for Morton's Hot Salt that has now been discontinued, Brown said she makes her own by mixing table salt in a bowl with Sriracha, Tabasco and cayenne, then spreading it on parchment-covered cookie sheets and letting it dry naturally. After it's dry, she said, crush and pour into a shaker. ...

And for Adam Staple, who's looking for a Chinese restaurant that serves big dumplings and cold sesame noodles, Ann Brown faxed to recommend New York Chinese at 3545 S. Fort Apache Road. ...
