Readers debate Chicago pizza

As Carolyn Czech has discovered, Las Vegas can be a tough place to find true Chicago deep-dish pizza, but readers have a few suggestions.

Terri Pastorelli recommended Amore Pizza & Pasta, 3945 S. Durango Drive, adding, “the owner and chef are both from Chicago, so they know what they’re doing!” Former Chicago resident Mike Lazarski, who said he considers deep-dish pizza “more of a Chicago touristy thing,” suggested Aurelio’s, 7530 W. Cheyenne Ave., adding, “I don’t believe they make deep-dish but their pizza is truly Chicago-style.” Marv Udell also suggested Aurelio’s, as well as Rosati’s, 2555 Wigwam Parkway in Henderson. And John “The Big Kahuna” Taylor faxed to suggest the Four Kegs Tavern, 276 N. Jones Blvd., and Northside Nathan’s, “Home of the Detroit Deep Dish Pizza,” at 7531 W. Lake Mead Blvd. …

For Susan Ward, who’s looking for Campbell’s Chunky Beef Stroganoff soup, Brent Shaw e-mailed that he buys it at Smith’s at 4440 N. Rancho Drive, Shirley Stanfield e-mailed that she found it at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 3615 S. Rainbow Blvd. and Lynn Isaacs saw it at Albertsons at 2885 E. Desert Inn Road — though she added, “but I would sure call first,” which is always good advice. …

For Pat Lambert, who’s looking for Karo pancake and waffle syrup, Raymond Moreton e-mailed that he special-orders it from the Smart & Final store at 1435 E. Tropicana Ave. “Only problem is, you need to buy a case of it.” …

For Neil Carmona, who’s looking for gravlax, Bill and Libby Hoover e-mailed that Sunflower Farmer’s Market at 3365 E. Tropicana Ave. carries a wide selection of salmon, and they’ve found that Echo Falls brand Scandinavian Style Grav Lax “tastes almost as good as the freshly sliced variety we bought in New York City.” There’s another Sunflower at 4020 S. Rainbow Blvd. …

For Mary Dowling, who’s looking for a local source for Weber’s Mustard, Rosemarie Canfield e-mailed that she hasn’t found it in Las Vegas but orders from www.buffalofoods.com (or call 716-892-5355). …

For Jim and Norma Lucey, Dorothy McComb e-mailed that she found Purnell’s Old Folks’ Country Sausage at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 8060 W. Tropical Parkway. …
