Readers on lookout for low-carb bread

It’s rare that I start this column with a request — and rarer still that I let a query bump our customary six-month queue — but rarest of all is the case of getting requests for the same product from three people within a few days, so here it is:

Al DeRicco, Ellen Hamil and Mary Corsiglia are looking for Aunt Hattie’s low-carb bread, which Corsiglia and DeRicco used to get at Wal-Mart and Hamil at Vons and Smith’s. DeRicco said he’d settle for other low-carb breads that don’t "cost $8 or $9 per loaf," and Hamil said she’s also interested in low-carb pita pockets, which she found in New Hampshire….

While we’re at it, here are more reader requests.

Judy Binder: fresh or frozen spanakopita;

Mark Decerbo: Mello Yello soda in cans;

Chava Gomez: fresh monkfish;

Steve Alpert: coconut water in waxed containers;

Dallas Moyer: Johnsonville beef summer sausage, formerly found at Smith’s;

Jack Oliver: rye flour;

Sylvia Gatrell: fresh goat meat;

Joyce Block: Cambodian tuk trey dipping sauce, dried fenugreek leaves and tandoori spice mix;

Kathy Jones: Mrs. Richardson’s Caramel Sauce;

Pat Ferrell: Marzetti’s Oriental Sesame Dressing;

Richie Marushok: small packets of squid ink and smallish bags of durum flour;

And Max L. Bingham: restaurants that serve Mandarin duck, and places to order a spice cake with mocha frosting.

And here are some things readers have found for each other:

For Jan Edwards, Colleen Sams found whole-wheat minibagels at Albertsons at 2650 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway in Henderson and Julie Kososondi at Sam’s Club. …

For Mary Grego-Smith, Sams found Louisiana Seasoned Chicken Fry Mix at the same store, and for Shaun Spencer, she found Tropical Cherry Preserves there. …

For Marva Perry, who’s looking for DiCecco No. 24 rigatoni, Kathy Miller and Julie Zerbel said it’s among many DiCecco varieties available at Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road, and someone at Siena Food at 1335 E. Sunset Road e-mailed that the store carries it as well. …

For Jack Ploucher, the Siena representative said the store also carries whole hot cherry peppers. …

For all you lovers of Blue Bell Ice Cream out there — and I know there are many — Zerbel also said she found it at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Kingman, Ariz. …

And for those looking for Victoria Mexican Beer, it’s now available at Mariana’s Supermarkets, King Ranch Markets, Terrible Herbst, Speedee Mart and La Bonita.
