Readers revel in joys of split-top buns
July — which is National Hot Dog Month — may be over, but I know there still are a lot of people out there grilling hot dogs for a quick alfresco summer meal. Split-top buns are the finishing touch (and for lobster rolls and similar sandwiches as well), so it’s fortuitous that we have tips from fellow Taste of the Town readers today for R.J. Piantidosi, who’s looking for them.
Pearl Prunetta, Cheryl Berggren, Ann Brown, CeCi Schreiber, Cornell Rowbotham and John Carrier found them at that palace of all things East Coast and New England, Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road.
Diane Coleman, Rick Franco, Gloria Castricone and Claudia Wright found King’s Hawaiian split-top rolls (which, as Coleman pointed out, are softer and sweeter than traditional rolls) at local Smith’s and Fresh & Easy stores.
“Smith’s makes some rolls that are not split at all,” emailed Dave Levesque. “All you have to do is break them off and split them down the top. You can also butter the sides and toast/grill them.”
And as a side note, Nancy Nolette, who identifies as “a former Downeaster,” said when she recently got a hot dog at Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers at 1290 W. Warm Springs Road in Henderson, it came on a split-top bun. There’s another Freddy’s at 9809 S. Eastern Ave. …
For mizithra cheese, sought by Penny Reese for making pasta with brown butter and mizithra, Prunetta, Kay Dawson, Gloria Minter, June Tegtmeier and Susan Pines found it at various Smith’s stores, where Prunetta said it’s not at the deli counter but in the cheese case across from it, and Pines reported buying it in chunks and taking it home to grate fresh.
Russ L. Russell and B. Ruth found mizithra cheese at Sprouts Farmers Market, which has five stores in the valley. Gig Fredendall reported finding it on the specialty cheese aisle at Vons at 2511 Anthem Village Drive in Henderson, where “it is finely grated and just like they used to serve at the Spaghetti Factory.” Berggren found it at Winco at 6101 N. Decatur Blvd.; there’s another Winco at 80 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson. And Brown found it at Glazier’s. …
More on caviar: Jan Visser found it at Artisanal Foods at 2053 Pama Lane, where, he said, he “spent about two hours just looking at all the products.”…

Pete DeMonte is looking for hot dogs sold loose, by the pound, which he used to find in deli departments in the East. …
“We have tried many alternatives to Sunny Acres Coffee Syrup,” faxed Bruce and Charlene Johnson, adding that they used to get it at 99 Cents Only stores. “But nothing compares to its vanilla and hazelnut flavors. Perhaps your many readers can help us find this product somewhere in Las Vegas.”
