Taste of the Town: For this comfort food, valley is your cabbage patch
Stuffed cabbage and cabbage rolls are homey, comforting and, for many of us, reminiscent of childhood, but kind of a pain to make. But never fear; fellow Taste of the Town readers have suggestions for Bob Schaffhauser, who’s looking for them.
Bill Hurst recommended Khoury’s at 6115 S. Fort Apache Road, Don Barrington emailed that Winchell’s Pub &Grill at 10620 S. Eastern Ave. in Henderson has cabbage rolls as a Wednesday night special, Jean Zinteck said the Bagel Cafe at 301 N. Buffalo Drive has “huge rolls served with lots of sauce,” Ann Brown said they’re on the Thursday night deli buffet at the Rampart Casino at 221 N. Rampart Blvd., she and Mel Neri said they’re available in the deli department at Glazier’s Food Marketplace at 8525 W. Warm Springs Road and Carole McGilton emailed that Weiss Restaurant, Deli and Bakery at 2744 N. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson makes them and sells them in the deli.
One note: Most of our tipsters said the stuffed cabbage or cabbage rolls aren’t always available and suggested you call before you go — always good advice if you’re looking for a specific item and don’t want to be disappointed. …
For Murray Leitner, who’s looking for a restaurant, preferably on the west side, that serves “a good steak picado like I used to get in San Jose,” Nin Ansara emailed, “I can’t speak to the dish in San Jose, but at Ricardo’s, which is on the west side (4930 W. Flamingo Road, at Decatur Boulevard), we serve both a steak and a chicken picado of which we’re proud.”…
For Alan Bianco, who’s looking for a local source for coconut custard (not coconut cream) pie, Bridget Williams emailed that the three valley locations of Marie Callender’s will make one fresh, with 24 hours notice. …
More on ham salad: Tom Fitzgerald emailed that he found it freshly made in the deli at Smith’s at 3850 E. Flamingo Road. “They say they make and sell a lot of it,” he wrote, “as nobody else carries it anymore.” He suggests calling ahead to be sure it’s available, at 702-451-2246. …
And more on malasadas: Deb Hollenbeck sent an order form from Leonard’s in Hawaii, with information on getting them by next-day shipping. Visit www.LeonardsHawaii.com, or call 808-737-5591.
