The tide was up once more at Lake Bellagio on Sunday night, but this time with, dragons, fire and the logo of a hot cable series.
A medley of the theme for HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and the song “Winter Is Here” from the show premiered at Bellagio Fountains water show on the Las Vegas Strip on Sunday night. The new number will run at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. daily, in rotation through April 13. The series premieres its eighth and final series on April 14.
“Game of Thrones” composer Ramin Djawadi and WET Design Chief Executive Officer Mark Fuller were on hand to check out the premiere, which had been teased to with oblique images on MGM Resorts International’s social media feeds through the past week.
The number marks the first TV partnership for the iconic water attraction, and also the first time fire has been featured on the lake.
“We thought the music of the show would be especially inspirational to have out here, and we essentially co-created this show,” said Fuller, whose production company has designed the music of Frank Sinatra, Elvis, The Beatles and, most recently Lady Gaga for the lake’s water shows. “Every one of these artists has been a treat for us to work with.”
“It’s quite an honor I can’t believe my music is playing here,’ Djawadi said. “It’s incredible to see anytime, but when you hear your own music, it’s really unbelievable.”
When Fuller, Djawadi and HBO entered into talks about how to display the show on the lake, Fuller was met with a challenge.
“They asked, ‘What can you do that’s never been done before?’ ” Fuller said. “Well, we have fire — a wall of water, and we have the dragon destroy that wall with real fire. That blew the fire marshal’s mind the first time we did it.” Standing next to Fuller, the composer laughed and added, “Mine, too.”
