‘Incredibles’ sequel finally in the works
Disney’s Pixar has confirmed a sequel to “The Incredibles,” a decade after the popular animated superhero flick first hit theaters.
The sequel was announced Tuesday by Disney’s Bob Iger at a briefing for shareholders in Portland, Ore. Disney confirmed the announcement on social media.
Iger said in addition to “The Incredibles 2,” Pixar will work on a second sequel to 2006’s “Cars.” The “Cars” franchise is widely considered to be the weakest of Pixar’s offerings. The first film earned $461 worldwide ($244 domestically), and “Cars 2,” released in 2011, earned $560 million worldwide ($191 million domestically).
Comparatively, 2004’s “The Incredibles” earned $631 million ($261 million domestically) and left fans clamoring for a sequel. The film’s characters have remained strong sellers in the “Disney Infinity” game, according to Variety.
The release date for the films hasn’t been announced, but Pixar will release two new movies in 2015: “Inside Out”, which is set inside a human brain, and “Finding Dory,” a sequel to 2003’s “Finding Nemo.”
Disney has also released an official timeline for the new “Star Wars” and confirmed one returning character: R2-D2.
Shooting will begin in May on “Star Wars: Episode VII,” which is set three decades after 1983’s “Return of the Jedi,” Associated Press reports.
Iger said the movie would feature “some very familiar faces along with a trio of new, young leads.” It’s set for release in December 2015.
