A look at some of the DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores this week:
DVDS
“The Woman in Black” (PG-13): A struggling young lawyer (“Harry Potter’s” Daniel Radcliffe), dispatched to a remote British village, battles a vengeful ghost in an old-fashioned, Victorian-era thriller.
And speaking of old-fashioned, “Red Tails” (PG-13) recounts the exploits of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, black World War II pilots battling Axis powers in the skies and segregation on the ground; Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr. lead the cast. “This Means War” (PG-13) focuses on the battle between CIA agents (Chris Pine, Tom Hardy) competing for the affections of a lovelorn consumer products tester (Reese Witherspoon). Rounding out today’s recent releases: “The Secret World of Arrietty” (G), an adaptation of Mary Norton’s kid-lit classic “The Borrowers,” from the animation wizards of Japan’s Studio Ghibli.
Topping today’s documentary list: “Carol Channing: Larger Than Life” (PG) and “The Strange Case of Alice Cooper” (not rated), filmed in 1979.
And turning up on today’s TV-to-DVD transfer list (all unrated unless otherwise noted): “My Babysitter’s a Vampire: The First Season” (PG), “The River: The Complete First Season” (G), “Teen Wolf: The Complete Season One,” “Survivor: Guatemala” and “Survivor: Panama – Exile Island,” “Sherlock: Season Two,” “Rizzoli & Isles: The Complete Second Season,” “S.W.A.T. – The Final Season,” “Route 66: The Complete Series” and “The Dean Martin Variety Show Uncut.”
CDS
Garbage, “Not Your Kind of People”: Ready for some trash talk?
“I think it picks up from how we were at the very beginning,” Garbage guitarist Steve Marker said of his band’s new record, their first in seven years, speaking to the R-J in April.
And that’s a good thing, as Garbage’s early albums were characterized by sultry, sophisticated alt-rock with a throbbing digital pulse.
Also in stores: Kris Allen, “Thank You Camellia”; Joe Bonamassa, “Driving Towards the Daylight”; The Cult, “Choice of Weapon”; Gossip, “A Joyful Noise”; John Mayer, “Born and Raised”; MercyMe, “The Hurt & The Healer”; Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Covers EP”; Royal Thunder, “CVI”; Slash, “Apocalyptic Love”; Smile Empty Soul, “3’s”; and Soulsavers, “The Light the Dead See.”
