Latest DVDs, CDs, books: May 8

A look at some of the DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores this week:

DVDS

“The Vow” (PG-13): A young husband (Channing Tatum) must rewin the heart of his wife (Rachel McAdams) after she awakens from a coma, with no memory of their marriage, in this old-fashioned melodrama based on a true story.

Rounding out today’s recent releases, Kate Beckinsale returns as warrior Selene in “Underworld: Awakening” (R), leading vampires and Lycans into battle against the humans trying to wipe out both clans.

From there, it’s on to titles that never made it to local theaters. A violently jealous husband (Danny Huston) suspects his pianist wife (“Law & Order’s” Elisabeth Rohm ) of having an affair in the psychological thriller “The Kreutzer Sonata” (R), which co-stars Huston’s Oscar-winning half sister Anjelica. High school students unearth dark hometown secrets in the chiller “Playback” (R), with Christian Slater, while a remake of the Troma horror workout “Mother’s Day” (R) features Rebecca DeMornay. “Friday Night Lights’ ” Aimee Teegarden headlines the coming-of-age tale “Beautiful Wave” (PG-13). And “Adult Swim” comedy fixtures Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim team up in “Tim and Eric’s Billion-Dollar Movie” (R).

And a hometown favorite tops today’s TV transfers (all unrated): Robert Urich as detective Dan Tanna in “Vegas: The Third Season, Volume One.” Also on tap: “60 Minutes: Remembering Mike Wallace,” “Love’s Everlasting Courage,” “The Big C: The Complete Second Season,” “Fantasy Island: The Complete Second Season” and “Chuck: The Complete Fifth Season.”

CDS

Damon Albarn, “Dr Dee”: This new one from Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn is an opera based on the life and times of John Dee, a scientific adviser to Elizabeth I, created with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

Two words: circle pit!

“11th Hour” by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro: The latest in the Women’s Murder Club series finds Lindsay Boxer pregnant, but that’s not slowing her down as she looks into the murder of a millionaire as well as the discovery of two heads found in an actor’s garden.

Also this week, Richard Paul Evans tells of one man’s search for hope after losing everything in “The Road to Grace.”
