Locals Only: Cheap summer movies, water for homeless, infectious music

You can’t buy much with a dollar these days.

Aside from this fine newspaper, that is. (Thanks for picking this one up, by the way.)

But for the next two months, that dollar can buy frazzled parents some peace of mind, roughly 90 minutes at a time.

Century’s Summer Movie Clubhouse and Regal’s Summer Movie Express are showing family movies on weekday mornings for $1 a ticket. Or you can buy tickets to all 10 Century screenings for $5.

Century’s Summer Movie Clubhouse kicks off with “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Santa Fe Station, 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sam’s Town and the Suncoast, and 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Cinedome. The series continues each week at those times by “Horton Hears a Who!” “The Smurfs,” “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” “Dolphin Tale,” “Happy Feet,” “Oceans,” “Rio,” “Chimpanzee” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”

Regal’s Summer Movie Express offers two movies a week at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Colonnade and Village Square, starting with “The Three Stooges” and “Ice Age: Continental Drift.” They’ll be followed by “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Parental Guidance”; “Mr. Poppers’ Penguins” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked”; “Monte Carlo” and “Rio”; “Coraline” and “ParaNorman”; “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” and “Big Miracle”; “Yogi Bear” and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”; “Racing Stripes” and “Happy Feet Too”; and “African Cats” and “Chimpanzee.”

Eric Herman

Millions of YouTube hits can’t be wrong. Just ask Eric Herman, whose witty musical ditties (including “The Elephant Song”) have been seen and heard everywhere from PBS Kids to the movie “Life As We Know It.” Now, Herman brings his tunes to the Clark County and Whitney libraries, promising to entertain audiences from 5 to 55 with comedy, creativity and audience participation.

Water for homeless

You know how parched you get just living your life in Southern Nevada — especially during the summer? Imagine how much worse it would be if you were homeless.

Details: To help them, Whole Foods Markets are collecting donations of bottled water through Aug. 31 at their four valley locations. And for every bottle of Real Water purchased at a Whole Foods store during that period, Real Water will donate a bottle. HELP of Southern Nevada distributes the water .

The Dirty Hooks

This coed rock troupe is among Vegas’ most infectious bands. Also on the bill with The Dirty Hooks are The Stone Foxes from San Francisco and locals Jack & The B-Fish.
