VIRAL VIDEO: Oscar winner thought she was “unbeautiful” because of her skin color
It took listening to Oprah and other idols for this Oscar winner to realize her skin color did not make her “unbeautiful.”
When Lupita Nyong’o was young, she tried to strike deals with God to make her skin lighter. She had been trained by culture that white was beauty and her skin tone was not.
But then she saw the media glamorous a woman who looked more like her, and she heard Oprah call her beautiful, and soon enough, she was on the journey her mother placed her on, to realize the true meaning of beauty.
She told this story with striking force last week when she earned Best Breakthrough Performance at Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. The video has been gaining fans ever since.
