Ani DiFranco playing Hard Rock Cafe
There have long been parallels between 92-year-old folk firebrand Pete Seeger and his feminine, contemporary counterpart Ani DiFranco.
But DiFranco makes this connection explicit on her latest disc, “Which Side Are You On?,” which takes its name for a protest tune extolling the merits of unionization that Seeger popularized.
As her career has advanced, DiFranco has shifted her focus from sexual and identity politics to just plain politics, a working-class musician giving voice to working-class concerns.
The common denominator?
Defiance.
