Brooklyn Bowl brings in the funk with Trombone Shorty

If Trombone Shorty needs a roof over his head between weekends at Coachella, the new Brooklyn Bowl should feel just like home.

The trombone and trumpet funk dealer had his last two albums produced by Ben Ellman of Galactic, which closes down a residency in the club Friday and Saturday.

His most recent album, “Say That to Say This,” was co-produced by Raphael Sadiq (who opened another new venue, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas’ Chelsea). It sounds more like Shorty (aka Troy Andrews) and the Orleans Avenue band in their natural live state.

Andrews is the hometown hero of a New Orleans musical family and came to wider attention in 2010, when he appeared in the HBO series “Treme,” about the neighborhood where he grew up.

The band may get to be friends with Arcade Fire by performing on the same two Coachella Sundays as the Canadian rockers, then following their set at the New Orleans Jazz Fest on May 4.
