Like fellow big-voiced Brit Adele, Florence Welch bats her lashes at bombast, bear-hugs the baroque.
The difference between the two is that Welch does it over a backdrop as grandiloquent and theatrical as her florid vocal lines.
Her tunes are the equivalent of shopping at Costco: Everything comes in the most outsize packages possible.
As the center of the equally soulful and artful Florence + the Machine, Welch favors romanticism over restraint, huffing and puffing and blowing subtlety’s house down.
And hey, good riddance.
Boldness is Welch’s thing, and she wears it like a curve-hugging cocktail dress.
