Solid skills meant for large halls when Biffy Clyro takes the stage
A few years back, Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro opened for the Foo Fighters in front of 65,000 fans a night at a stadium in England.
That’s a fitting pairing, as Biffy Clyro is, in some ways, a U.K. version of the Foos: a solid, skilled band whose popularity, at least abroad, doesn’t quite jibe with their middle-of-the-road repertoire.
Clyro’s tunes are tailored for large music halls, all ringing guitars, dramatic crescendos and impassioned, say-it-like-you-mean-it vocals.
Their songs have some substance to them, both in terms of their grandiose arrangements and searching, existentialist lyrics.
Still, it often seems as if the band is merely playing a well-established role — even if they do play it well.
