’90s classic Surge returns to store shelves, finally
Don’t call it a comeback — it’s been here for years … just really, really hard to get your hands on.
We’re talking about Surge, of course, the ’90s cult soda developed in the mid-nineties by Coca-Cola and killed in the early aughts because it wasn’t popular enough, despite holding a special place in the hearts of nineties kids across the country.
Coke said on Tuesday that Surge was finally back on store shelves, after first announcing the decision in August. You’ll mostly find it along the East Coast and throughout the South and Midwest (so pretty much everywhere you won’t be anytime soon, if you live in Las Vegas). More locations will be announced on a rolling basis, though, so keep checking this map if you want to get your hands on some Surge without having to break the bank on eBay. If you really can’t handle the wait, head over to Amazon and get your slightly overpriced fix for $14 for a 12-pack.
Coke first reintroduced Surge in Sept. 2014 on Amazon, and has been test-marketing the drink in stores in the Southeast for a few months now. The company has credited the drink’s resurgence in part to the “Surge Movement,” a social media movement started by Evan Carr, Sean Sheridan and Matt Winans.
Along with urging Surge supporters to contact Coke on a regular basis, the trio purchased space on a billboard near Coke headquarters in 2013 to catch the eyes of executives. It said, “Dear Coke, we couldn’t buy SURGE, so we bought this billboard instead.”
