Award-winning company sets auditions

The stage is calling to those interested in being a part of the award-winning Rainbow Company Youth Theatre. Open auditions for the student ensemble and for roles in “My Neighbor, the Monster” are scheduled on Saturdays in August at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center.

Youths ages 10 to 18 expressing a serious interest in the theater are invited to audition Saturday for the 2007-08 student ensemble. Participants receive intensive training in all aspects of the theater, from acting to set construction. Mandatory classes are held weekly throughout the year and students are required to work on all five of the company’s productions.

In the theater’s first production of the season, “My Neighbor, the Monster,” adults and young people age 10 and up may audition Aug. 25 for roles in this play that follows a boy as he searches for answers about a mysterious man living in a scary old house at the end of a darkly shadowed street.

“My Neighbor” playwright Brian Kral says that his own childhood appreciation for black-and-white horror movies and actors such as Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, who created the roles of Frankenstein and Dracula, influenced the writing of the play.

Kral recommends auditioners brush up on impressions of people such as Karloff, Peter Lorre, Dwight Frye and Lugosi. The show dates for “My Neighbor, the Monster” are Oct. 5-14.

Rainbow Company Youth Theatre is a program of the Arts & Community Events Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services. Each audition begins at 1 p.m. in the Reed Whipple Cultural Center located at 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably, but no other preparation is necessary. Call 229-6553 for information.
