Best of Celebrity Fashion

Editor’s Note: Fashion Walk-Off is one in a series of articles written in collaboration by the image staff. Fashion reporter Xazmin Garza and image editor Susan Stapleton take a look at the fashions worn by celebrities and offer their opinions.

As soon as a celebrity’s shiny heel touches a red carpet, the scrutiny begins. Hair, makeup and, of course, the duds, are subject to close examination from fashion critics, magazine editors and viewers at home. Celebrities know this. Their stylists’ careers depend on it.

Some manage to conquer the red carpet every time. Others get conquered. Both make watching all the awards shows, reading the glossies and tuning into E! worth every second. Take a look at our list of the best and worst dressed celebrities of 2007.

STAPLETON’S BEST OF 2007

Reese Witherspoon

This hot mom dumped her hubby and spent 2007 looking like a million bucks on the red carpet. She showed all of us how to properly break up with a man. How much do you think Ryan Phillippe is regretting the divorce? Eat your heart out, Ryan.

Helen Mirren

Mirren showed everyone that age just doesn’t matter. She dressed appropriately for her years yet played off her best assets consistently on the red carpet. Regal and elegant, the way for a true star to shine.

Eva Longoria

This "Desperate Housewife" never looked desperate on the red carpet. In fact, she outshined the rest of the cast in every way when she had the spotlight. With her face constantly in the gossip columns, she made nary a fashion misstep this year from award shows to wedding.

GARZA’S BEST OF 2007

Victoria Beckham

She wrote the book on style. No really, it’s called "That Extra Half an Inch." Beckham garners the most bulb flashes on a red carpet for a reason: the woman is always head-to-toe fierce. And don’t even get me started on the cut … Now if she’d just eat a Twinkie or two.

Dita von Teese

The immaculate burlesque performer makes my list for two reasons. One, she refuses to employ a stylist and frowns on celebrities who do. Two, she shed her one disgraceful fashion accessory in 2007: Marilyn Manson.

Jay-Z

For all those amateurs still sagging their pants and donning oversized basketball jerseys, behold your physical rebuttal. Jay-Z isn’t just a rapper; he’s a business mogul and his clothes reflect that. If Donald Trump had Wu Tang on his iPod, this is how he’d dress.

STAPLETON’S WORST OF 2007

Amy Winehouse

Winehouse needs to book a stint in fashion rehab (but she said, no, no, no). The over-the-top looks. The emaciated body. That outrageous makeup. That beehive. Enough said.

Mischa Barton

The newest member of the celebrity DUI club just keeps going downhill with her fashion choices. Dreadlocks? Grunge? Sneakers on heels? What happened to "The O.C." days when you shined on the red carpet?

Fergie

This member of the tabloid princesses seems to take her fashion risks to the limit. Not that her cohorts in crime (Britney, Paris, Lindsay) dress any better, but the Dutchess is far from Fergalicious. I can’t tell if she is intentionally trying to look trashy or if she’s just clueless.

GARZA’S WORST OF 2007

Tiffany "New York" Pollard

The more reality shows "New York" does, the closer she resembles a drag queen. Her showgirl lashes, stilt-like heels and Cirque du Soleil makeup job could have her on the "La Cage" lineup in no time. No, I don’t have love for "New York," or her silicone-stuffed airbags or her ashy cigarettes.

Sienna Miller

For all the fashion hype surrounding the British actress, missteps such as her Valentino bloodbath should never happen. Scarlet red lips, a slick blond up-do and dark brows? Leave that to Gwen Stefani and stick to what you know, Miller. Wait, what is that again?

Britney Spears

Because a worst list of any kind just wouldn’t be complete without her.
