Here Comes THE SUN

Here in Vegas, summer heat gets started a little earlier and the merciless sun beats down much harder. While it might mean sporting espadrilles and strapless tops long before the snowbird states, it also puts you at higher risk for sun damage.

If you sport the right gear, however, you can have all the fun in the sun you crave with much less risk. Thanks to the widespread skin cancer awareness efforts, this doesn’t require sacrificing a commitment to fashion anymore. To the contrary, the sun-conscious items considered hot commodities this season are so style-friendly you might end up giving your look a promotion.

Check out our list of the 10 must-have items for sun protection.

MAD HATTER

Your nose, and any other body part that protrudes from your body, carries the most risk for sun damage. A chic hat with a big, floppy brim or a funky, cowboy-style made of straw will shade your face and keep you looking in the style know.

EYES HAVE IT

They’ve always been a staple for coolness so you can’t go wrong with a hot pair of sunglasses, so long as they have a UV protection sticker. Wraparounds and oversized Jackie O frames offer the most coverage with superior style.

BLOCK PARTY

Don’t leave home without the sunblock. Be sure it’s at least SPF 30 and if you’re brand loyal, look out for products from your favorite beauty companies such as Kiehl’s, Philosophy, La Prairie and more.

COVER UP

Wear a caftan in between pool dips to stave off the rays and maintain your glam status. Designers such as Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors and Missoni have paid such careful attention to this garment that you will want to don it far beyond the pool.

CHANGE OF A DRESS

If the caftan comes off too boho for your style, reach for a maxi-dress instead. The length protects those gams from getting burned and the dress itself is the hottest garment for the summer. (Rub extra SPF on your exposed shoulders.)

THAT’S A WRAP

This one serves many functions. Aside from the fact you can wrap a pareo into a long skirt or short dress, you can also use it to cover your shoulders or shade your locks, scarf style.

SELF-SUFFICIENCY

The only healthy tan is one that comes from a spray gun or a bottle. The latter is more affordable. Invest in a self-tanner that accommodates your personal needs and sport that gorgeous glow without an ounce of regret.

MADE IN THE SHADE

You’re not truly sittin’ pretty until you’re sitting under a lovely umbrella. Ward off the dangerous rays with this charming accessory.

IN THE BAG

So now that you have all this stuff, where do you store it? Everyone from Target to Juicy Couture can supply you with a bag that’s big — and pretty — enough to carry all your SPF, sunglasses and sun gear.

THROW IN THE TOWEL

You simply can’t look chic from head-to-toe without fully executing the effort. Don’t carry around your old My Little Pony beach towel from years ago. Instead, pick up a new one that complements the rest of your look.
