Style in the City

They’re the best, most fashionable friends you’ve ever had. You haven’t heard from them in four years, but now they’ve returned for a whole 148 minutes. Finally, you get to find out if Carrie gets Big to commit, if Samantha’s capable of monogamy, if Charlotte’s the perfect mom and if Miranda’s still bossing Steve around in Brooklyn. But who has time to think about that when the cast has 300 wardrobe changes? The real question is, what will they be wearing?

Here’s the breakdown of each character’s style, how it evolved over the years and where it is today.

CARRIE BRADSHAW

Style summary: "Creative, eclectic and definitely the high-low mix," said Kim Martin, StyleList.com editor, who has previewed the movie.

Fashion evolution: Carrie always had her signature accessories. As she changed, so did the accoutrements: gold plate "Carrie" necklace; flower corsage; strappy Manolo Blahnik sandals; big, fluffy fur coat; Dior saddleback handbag; horseshoe necklaces; Fendi bag; engagement ring from Aidan; and back to the "Carrie" necklace.

Where is she now? "Remember, she’s off the market now so there are fewer club clothes," Martin said. "She keeps her whimsy but with an innate sense of style. It could be vintage, couture or H&M."

SAMANTHA JONES

Style summary: She knows what she wants and exactly which body part she should emphasize to get it.

Fashion evolution: "Samantha was always the one never afraid of color or bold prints. She loved the ’80s power suits," said Jenna Doughton, local life stylist and die-hard "Sex and the City" fan. With each season, Samantha got a little braver than the last. That could translate to a neon pant suit or a micro-mini Roberto Cavalli dress.

Where is she now? "Samantha changes the least," Martin said of the vixen’s look in the film. "She still follows her own rules and doesn’t care what people think."

CHARLOTTE YORK GOLDENBLATT

Style summary: Prim and proper preppy.

Fashion evolution: In the first season she donned a lot of black, perhaps a nod to her art background. By the last season, it was a parade of bows, plaid and pastels.

Where is she now: "She’s more bound by rules, society and expectations than the others. She’s a mother now so it’s less frilliness and more of a Jackie O look," Martin said.

MIRANDA HOBBES

Style summary: Miranda means business. The show’s wardrobe stylist outfitted her in every skirt suit from Bebe to Tahari to Barneys Co-op.

Fashion evolution: "She was the ‘I’m not gonna let fashion dictate who I am’ character," Doughton said. "But she softened up after Steve and the baby and started expressing herself with her clothes."

Where is she now: According to Martin, Miranda demonstrates a fashion confidence we haven’t seen before. "She’s wearing a metallic suit in the opening scene," she said. "When would she have ever done that?"
