With the Las Vegas Valley enjoying cooler temperatures, the R-J offers its annual list of upcoming holiday and craft bazaars for those who want to head outdoors.
One nonprofit group preparing for its craft fair is the Los Prados Women’s Club. The 223 club members, who range in age from their 40s to 90s, have been busy working on homemade items for the club’s fair, which raises funds for local charities.
The fair will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 20 at 5150 Los Prados Circle. The club also will have its annual bake sale featuring pies, cakes, a coffee bar and other items 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 17.
“We have quite a variety of things that come in, all of them handmade,” says Lynn Parker, the first vice president of the club and chairwoman of the crafts bazaar.
Among the items featured at the fair are flower arrangements, wreaths, homemade soaps, Christmas decorations, aprons, shawls, hats and jewelry, in addition to candies and jellies.
“We just end up with a beautiful collection,” adds Parker, a seven-year member of the club.
Besides the craft fair and bake sale, the 10-year-old club has an annual rummage sale that raised more than $4,000 last year.
“Around $18,000 a year all together is given to charity,” says Parker.
After the bake sale, the club’s committee will decide which charities will receive the funds.
According to Parker, the club “picks out charities that are small and can really utilize the money.”
Some of the funds are given to a club member who works with disadvantaged families. The funds are used to help the families buy groceries.
Parker says the women in the club have “a wonderful relationship.”
“They are the most energetic, wonderful group,” says Parker.
