Design professionals invited to compete in sustainable suite event
Area design professionals are invited to design a sustainable hotel suite that will be built on the show floor of Hospitality Design Expo to be held in May in Las Vegas.
Sponsored by the American Society of Interior Designers, the U.S. Green Building Council and the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality, the first sustainable suite design competition was created to recognize forward thinking and Earth-conscious design ideas that will help drive green practices within the hotel industry.
“Incorporating sustainability into interior design projects is transitioning from an opportunity to a priority,” said Thom Banks, deputy executive director of ASID. “By recognizing and supporting healthier hotel environments, we are raising industry and consumer awareness on the importance of green design.”
In addition to the Sustainable Suite award that will be given to a team of as many as five design professionals, a Student and Young Professional award will be presented to emerging professionals.
Entries are due Aug. 31 and will judged based on the LEED Green Building Rating System and should include a focus on educating hotel guests on the importance and function of the green room’s attributes. Mandatory design elements for all submissions are water-efficient fixtures for bathroom, energy-efficient lighting, furniture, linens, carpet/flooring, wall covering/paint and recycling programs.
In addition to a signed entry form, entries must include a completed product specification form, signed in-kind contributor forms, project narrative, photos of design boards, 3-D color rendering and $250 fee, which will be waived for students.
To access the environmental scorecard that will be used during the judging, download the entry forms and read the complete contest rules, visit www.usgbc.org/sustainablesuite.
Judging will be completed by Oct. 1 and the winning team must commit to producing construction documents within six weeks of award notification. USGBC will inform the product manufacturers associated with the winning design and vendors will be asked to provide their products in-kind for the model.
