Las Vegas Valley students receive Byrd Scholarships

Twenty-seven Las Vegas Valley high school graduates were awarded scholarships from the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program. The students qualified for the scholarships by being named Nevada High School Scholars by the Nevada Department of Education.

For the 2006-07 school year, 1,270 high school seniors were named Nevada Scholars, and 53 of them were selected to receive the Byrd Scholarship of $1,500.

Local scholarship recipients are: Azaan Akbar and Jamie Garrett of Bishop Gorman High School; Kyle Berkley, Mina Chang, Christopher Chen, Sol Lee and David Scow of Green Valley High School; Andrew Burnett and Kristin Claunch of The Meadows School; Jennifer Cutshall, Michael Nawrott II, Jessica Sasaoka and Samantha Topham of Palo Verde High School; Shelby Green, Kelsey Jorgenson, Sarah Messina, Sabrina Ragaller and Chelsea Stephenson of Coronado High School; Seok Joon Hong, Andrew Mrugala, Shaan Patel and Katherine Ven of Clark High School; Erik Lovell of Foothill High School; Sara Nielson and Jenny Qi of Silverado High School; Shreesh Prasad of Advanced Technologies Academy; and Moriah Tobin of Valley High School.

In other youth news:

* Shaan Patel, a graduate of Clark High School, was awarded a $10,000 scholarship from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., and a $1,000 scholarship by Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.

Shaan also is one of two Nevada graduates named a 2007 Presidential Scholar by the U.S. Department of Education. Monica Ceragioli of Incline Village is the other honoree. The department selected 141 scholars, including a male and female student from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and from American families living abroad. Additionally, 15 scholars are chosen at large and 20 Presidential Scholars in the arts are selected. The scholars were honored for their accomplishments in Washington, D.C., in June.

Shaan will attend the University of Southern California this fall.

* Four Southern Nevada high school graduates were awarded $10,000 scholarships through Station Casinos UNLV Athletic Scholarship program. Each graduate will receive $2,500 a year for four years of their college education.

The recipients are Reina Cruz of Shadow Ridge High School, Cassie Donahoe of Foothill, Long Nguyen of Cimarron-Memorial High School and Stephanie Zobrist of Boulder City High School. The scholarship program awards high school seniors who have a parent employed by Station Casinos.

* The theater department at Palo Verde High School will present “Steel Magnolias: A Play in Two Acts” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the school theater, 333 Pavilion Center Drive. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. For ticket reservations, call 799-1450, Ext. 4051.
